I thought it was funny that Auntie Leila wrote about lilacs too. 🙂 Lilacs make me think of my Mom.  They always bloom around Mother’s day (in the Northeast) and purple is Mom’s favorite color, so there were always bouquets of lilac around the house at this time of year.  I remember on one of our first trips to the Martyrs Shrine in Auriesville, we passed a thicket full of lilacs and Mom made Dad pull over so she could pick a bunch.  I can’t remember if they were for our house or for a May Crowning that we were on our way to… Do you remember Mom?

Of course, lilac season usually falls in the month of the Blessed Mother, which makes them the perfect flower to bring to Our Lady.  I can remember when I went to St. Pauls Elementary, and later when I taught at MTA, more often than not the kids would bring lilacs in when it was their day to bring flowers to Mary.  If I just close my eyes and breath in the scent, I think of Mom, The Blessed Mother, rosary processions, Marian hymns and maybe, just a little, (don’t kill me Mom) too long trips in the big blue van!

And speaking of pretty and Moms…

  1. Like you, the smell of lilacs reminds me of May Crownings in my childhood. The fragrance puts me right back in the gymnasium of St. John the Evangelist School in Mahopac, NY. We were blessed to have Sisters of the Divine Compassion as teachers who led us in this Marian devotion each year. I don't know if my love of Mary began there, but it certainly nurtured it.

Now would someone tell me how to keep the cut branches alive longer than 24 hours? Should I add something to the water?

  2. I'm eager to see how the chair renovation turns out, I have some furniture that I'm trying to decide if we should reupholster or ditch it and find new (and more durable) instead.

  3. Wow. What a PROJECT that chair is! I bet it will be gorgeous.

I thought it was funny that Leila mentioned lilacs today too- and HOW she mentioned them. Because I feel that lilacs are just for ME too. 🙂 I only have white ones and fully admit to having purple lilac envy. Yours are stunning!

    • Thanks Rebecca! Fingers crossed on our chair project! And I can't take credit for my purple lilacs, there just happens to be a big ole' bush in the backyard of our rental. We lucked out!

  4. I like that vase that the lilacs are in, Ellen! I remember the lilac bush on the side of our house on Grand Street. It was so huge that I used to hide in there during games of hide and seek. I love the smell of lilacs — Bath and Body Works used to have a scented lilac line of lotions and body sprays, and my friends got me that as a shower gift before I was married, so the smell also brings me back to that time in my life. So yes, I love them, too!
